Analysis:

Four countries in the Region have eliminated malaria. Belize was certified malaria-free in 2023. The Region continues to progress, with nine countries committed to eliminating malaria in the WHO’s E-2025 disease elimination initiative. In 2022 and 2023, three countries—Suriname, Mexico and the Dominican Republic—reported progress toward the elimination of malaria and compliance with WHO protocols related to this impact indicator.

Since 2022, seven countries and one territory in the Region successfully reduced the number of reported cases between 2015 and 2022. Five countries and one territory were on track to achieving the target of a 75% reduction in malaria incidence and mortality by reducing the incidence of cases by 55% or more in 2022 compared with 2015. However, nine countries experienced either increases or no change in malaria incidence between 2015 and 2022.

This indicator reflects countries’ commitment to and compliance with the PAHO/WHO malaria elimination recommendations and the installed capacities that the countries have developed. With the support of PASB, donors, and other partners, E-2025 and other countries have made progress in introducing national WHO-recommended changes that further the malaria elimination agenda. By 2025, more countries will likely reach or come close to elimination by implementing essential improvements in their malaria-control programs.

Recommendation

• Continue implementing WHO-recommended improvements in malaria-control programs in collaboration with Member States and partners.
