During the 2024–2025 biennium, Ecuador made progress in the implementation of the Global Platform for Access to Childhood Cancer Medicines, an initiative aimed at improving the availability of essential treatments for children under five years of age diagnosed with cancer.
With technical support from PAHO, the country received the first shipment of pediatric oncology medicines, valued at more than USD 2 million, representing an important step toward ensuring timely access to quality treatments. In parallel, training activities were initiated for health personnel on the appropriate handling and use of these medicines, strengthening the clinical and operational capacities of the health system.
At the same time, PAHO supported the strengthening of supply chain management, including planning, storage, and distribution processes, as well as the preparation of logistical capacities required for the reception and handling of medicines requiring a cold chain.
In 2025, Ecuador distributed a total of 35 medicines in 53 different formulations provided through the platform, contributing to improved continuity of pediatric oncology treatment and strengthening the health system’s response to childhood cancer.
