Access increased through essential medicines list reform

During the 2024–2025 biennium, Trinidad and Tobago advanced in a comprehensive review of its National Essential Medicines List (NEML), reinforcing the foundations of access to quality-assured medicines for all.

PAHO provided technical leadership to ensure that the review process aligned with internationally accepted standards, national epidemiological priorities, and principles of cost-effectiveness and rational use. Through structured, evidence-based workshops, PAHO facilitated collaboration among the Ministry of Health, regional health authorities, clinicians, pharmacists, and academic partners, strengthening national capacity to apply transparent and ethical decision-making methodologies in medicines selection. The revised NEML responds to growing needs in noncommunicable diseases, oncology, and mental health, while considering affordability for both households and the health system.

By embedding international best practices and strengthening national expertise, PAHO’s contribution supports more efficient procurement planning, improved prescribing practices, and optimized allocation of health resources. These system-level advances contribute to more reliable availability of essential medicines, reduce disparities in access, and support improved health outcomes through timely and appropriate treatment across the life course.
