During the 2024–2025 biennium, PAHO played a critical role in supporting the Ministry of Health of Guyana to commission five new regional hospitals, a major structural advance toward health for all.
PAHO provided end-to-end technical cooperation to ensure that the commissioning process was systematic and aligned with international standards. This included the development of a comprehensive strategy that enabled the effective coordination of the commissioning process, including clinical, operational, and regulatory dimensions across facilities, as well as hands-on technical assistance to design and validate essential clinical and operational protocols. Through this support, the hospitals were commissioned in a manner that strengthened service readiness, patient safety, and quality assurance from the outset. The expansion of hospital capacity closer to communities reduces delays in diagnosis and treatment, strengthens referral networks, and alleviates pressure on the tertiary facility.
Over time, these improvements are expected to contribute to better health outcomes through improved continuity of services and access to comprehensive care across the life course. This achievement represents a foundational investment in Guyana’s health system, with lasting impact on service delivery capacity, health system resilience, and the country’s progress toward universal access to quality health services.
