Capacities strengthened to prepare for health emergencies

Despite external shocks such as Hurricane Melissa, the Cayman Islands demonstrated adaptability by maintaining progress in priority areas for health emergency preparedness. This reflects a broader pattern of resilience, with the territory consistently implementing emergency preparedness measures and communicable disease initiatives.

During the biennium, the Cayman Islands strengthened health preparedness and readiness at ports through PAHO-supported training. This initiative marked a critical step toward safeguarding public health amid rising natural hazards and pandemic threats, laying the foundation for more integrated and resilient responses. The territory is also in the final certification process for designation as a national influenza center, which will serve as the national hub for influenza surveillance, responsible for virus isolation, laboratory detection, and the provision of virus samples and epidemiological data to guide vaccine composition and pandemic preparedness.

By systematically strengthening health preparedness, PAHO’s cooperation contributes to reducing the health, social, and economic impacts of emergencies while safeguarding the continuity of essential health services and bolstering the Cayman Islands’ contribution to regional and global health security.
