Capacity enhanced to address the social and environmental determinants of health

In the context of increasing climate and social vulnerabilities, PAHO supported Dominica in strengthening its national capacity to address the social and environmental determinants of health through intersectoral and evidence-based action. During the biennium, PAHO provided direct technical assistance for the completion of national health adaptation planning and environmental health assessments, enabling Dominica to identify priority risks and plan health systems that are resilient to environmental challenges. Complementary support addressed social determinants of health – including expanded capacity to respond and prevent violence against women, girls, and groups in situations of vulnerability – through validated clinical protocols, provider training, and national awareness efforts. Actions to promote healthy aging were also advanced, supporting comprehensive approaches across the life course.

By integrating environmental, social, and human rights considerations into health planning and service delivery, PAHO helped to strengthen the enabling environment for healthier populations. These results contribute to reduced vulnerability to climate-related and social risks, improved protection for populations in situations of vulnerability, and more sustainable health outcomes aligned with Dominica’s national priorities and regional commitments.
