Comprehensive NCD care strengthened at the first level

During the 2024–2025 biennium, PAHO supported Nicaragua in strengthening national strategies for the prevention, early detection, and management of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), within the framework of the Family and Community Health Model.

Technical cooperation consisted of the provision of advisory services and equipment certified in accordance with internationally accepted standards, including 9000 blood pressure monitors, 4000 scales, stadiometers, and glucometers, and 11 thermoablation devices, aimed at improving the resolutive capacity of the first level of care. This enabled the expansion of timely screening and diagnosis of chronic diseases. In parallel, PAHO contributed to the updating and design of training materials, reinforcing the standardization of care and continuity of services. A key component was the strengthening of mental health community centers through the development of the digital health platform VITALMente and the provision of information technology equipment, thereby supporting the integration of mental health into primary health care.

These interventions, aligned with the Better Care for NCDs initiative, strengthened health system capacities to deliver comprehensive, accessible, and quality services to the entire population. By improving early detection, clinical management, and the integration of mental health, PAHO’s cooperation contributed to the national strategy aimed at reducing the risk of complications, improving treatment adherence, and laying stronger foundations for reducing the burden of NCDs, with effects on morbidity, avoidable mortality, and overall health and well-being.
