Guatemala made considerable progress in implementing a comprehensive model for noncommunicable disease (NCD) and mental health care within PHC, with PAHO technical cooperation. During the biennium, support was provided for the implementation of the National Strategic Plan for Chronic Kidney Disease and for the development of standardized clinical pathways for hypertension, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease, strengthening comprehensive management across the PHC network.
In parallel, the integration of the mhGAP program was consolidated through territorially tailored implementation plans and the training of health personnel for the early detection and initial management of mental health conditions.
A key advancement was territorial expansion. The participating Integrated Health Service Delivery Network Directorates increased from 4 in 2024 to 11 in 2025, driving the adoption of integrated approaches across their networks. The HEARTS initiative was strengthened, reaching 11 implementation sites.
The expansion of these interventions increased the resolutive capacity of the first level of care and promoted cost effective interventions for risk control. This achievement contributes to improving continuity of care, reducing avoidable complications, and advancing toward a replicable model of integrated care for chronic conditions, with expected impacts on reducing the burden of disease and improving the population’s quality of life.
