During the 2024–2025 biennium, Honduras initiated the digital transformation of the health sector through the design and launch of the Digital Health Transformation Roadmap 2024–2030, under the leadership of the Secretariat of Health, with the aim of advancing toward more integrated, efficient, and people centered care. PAHO added value by ensuring that this process was grounded in strong technical evidence and guided by a systemic vision oriented toward sustainable, long term results.
PAHO generated and leveraged evidence to inform strategic decision making by implementing the Information Systems for Health Maturity Assessment Tool, which identified the coexistence of more than 30 non interoperable systems and used these findings to prioritize and structure the digital health road map. With close support from regional advisers, the Organization led a methodological and analytical process that defined the implementation sequence and prioritized key enabling components – electronic health records, telemedicine, interoperability, and intelligent supply management – aligned with regional and international standards.
These efforts were complemented by the articulation of technical cooperation with the Italian Hospital of Buenos Aires, a PAHO/WHO Collaborating Center, and by capacity building through the training of 32 professionals from the human, animal, and environmental health sectors. Together, these actions laid the institutional and technical foundations for a digital transformation that enhances decision making, system efficiency, and continuity of care in Honduras.
