Emergency preparedness and response capacities substantially enhanced

PAHO played a central role in strengthening Antigua and Barbuda’s preparedness for and response to health emergencies by supporting training, systems development, and coordination mechanisms under an all-hazards approach.

With PAHO technical assistance, national authorities completed key trainings in incident command systems, emergency coordination, mass casualty management, and emergency care, enhancing the country’s operational readiness to manage multi-hazard events. In addition, the Organization supported the strengthening of surveillance and laboratory readiness through digitalization and improved use of information systems, contributing to earlier warning and faster response. These outputs were complemented by subregional investments, including the establishment and operationalization of emergency coordination capacities within the Eastern Caribbean, which directly benefit Antigua and Barbuda through shared protocols, surge capacity, and coordination platforms.

Together, these efforts improve the country’s ability to maintain essential health services during crises, reduce morbidity and mortality associated with disasters and outbreaks, and protect health system functionality in a context of high vulnerability to climate-related and other hazards.
