Enabling environments fostered through healthy municipalities

During the 2024–2025 biennium, PAHO supported the consolidation of a territorial model for local health and social inclusion through the healthy municipalities strategy, the Healthy Municipalities, Cities and Communities Movement, and the Global Network for Age-friendly Cities and Communities. Technical cooperation guided the planning, implementation, and monitoring of intersectoral actions at the municipal level, strengthening local capacities and integrating health for all, healthy aging, and human rights approaches.

As a result, four local governments advanced toward certification as age-friendly municipalities, promoting more accessible, safe, and supportive environments. These advances strengthen local governance for health, foster community participation, and create enabling conditions for improving well-being across the life course. Over the longer term, the model contributes to healthier environments and reduced disparities, with potential for replication and sustainability in other territories of the country.
