During the 2024–2025 biennium, PAHO made a pivotal contribution to strengthening Peru’s national epidemiological surveillance system and its capacity to respond to outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases.
Technical cooperation focused on strengthening diagnostic and operational capacities at the national and subnational levels through decentralized workshops in priority regions, with an emphasis on the timely detection of pertussis and on measles surveillance in areas with no reported cases. In addition, PAHO provided technical and operational assistance during the yellow fever outbreak, supporting the training of health personnel and coordination across levels of care. A key component was the strengthening of the National Institute of Health through the provision of equipment, the introduction of new diagnostic technologies, and improved reliability of molecular diagnostics.
These actions helped to protect the gains made in terms of elimination, reduce the risk of the reemergence of communicable diseases, and improve the country's capacity to detect and respond promptly to health threats, thereby strengthening the resilience of the health system and protecting the population from epidemic events.
