Healthy aging integrated into primary health care through ICOPE

During the 2024–2025 biennium, PAHO supported Chile in integrating a healthy aging approach into PHC through the adaptation and implementation of the Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) framework and the strengthening of interventions across the life course.

Technical cooperation included the development of training content hosted on the PAHO Virtual Campus for Public Health and interinstitutional coordination with the National Service for Older Persons and the PAHO/WHO collaborating Centre for Age-friendly Ecosystems at the Gerópolis Center, University of Valparaíso. These actions contributed to the systematic incorporation of early detection and management of functional decline within PHC, promoting a people-, family-, and community-centered approach.

The health system’s capacity to respond to the needs of an aging population was strengthened, improving continuity of care and promoting autonomy and quality of life for older persons. This progress contributes to the Decade of Healthy Ageing and reinforces the integration of policies and services across the life course, in alignment with national and regional priorities.
