During the 2024–2025 biennium, PAHO supported Chile in scaling up the use of the Productive Management Methodology for Health Services (PMMHS), strengthening the capacity of the hospital system to make evidence-based decisions on financing, efficiency, and resource use.
Technical cooperation focused on the setup and rollout of the methodology across 128 public hospitals, with effective implementation in 51 of them, alongside the optimization of data management processes and the strengthening of technical capacities within the Ministry of Health. This support enabled the systematic integration of productivity, costs, and efficiency as core dimensions of hospital management, aligned with objectives for financial protection and improved system performance.
Chile made progress toward more informed and transparent budget allocation, with a road map to progressively expand implementation of the methodology to achieve nationwide implementation by 2026, together with improvements in waiting list management and accountability for the use of public resources. The incorporation of PMMHS into the sectoral agenda contributes to the sustainability of the health system by facilitating gap identification, investment prioritization, and maximizing the impact of available resources.
This achievement strengthens progress toward health for all and positions Chile as a regional benchmark in evidence-based productivity management, with opportunities for horizontal cooperation—through technical exchange and communities of practice—with other countries in the Region that have advanced in the adoption of similar methodologies.
