Intersectoral action advanced to reduce risk factors for noncommunicable diseases

Within the framework of the regional initiative Better Care for NCDs, PAHO promoted an innovative intersectoral approach in Colombia to reduce risk factors for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), focusing on promoting physical activity in school settings.

Technical cooperation facilitated effective coordination among the Ministries of Health, Education, and Sport, generating evidence from quantitative and qualitative studies in education institutions in prioritized departments. Based on the evidence gathered in 10 schools across 3 departments, specific recommendations were developed for the design of school-based strategies to promote physical activity, recreation, and sport, accompanied by capacity-building for teaching staff and the provision of basic resources.

This experience contributed to integrating health into educational and social policies, strengthening protective environments from an early age. By addressing key behavioral determinants, this achievement lays the foundation for future reductions in the burden of NCDs, improves health throughout the life course, and reinforces intersectoral action as a pillar of public health policy.
