PAHO played a key role in strengthening Barbados’ regulatory and institutional capacity to improve access to safe, effective, and quality medicines and health technologies.
Through sustained technical assistance, PAHO supported legislative development and capacity-building toward the establishment of a national regulatory authority, reinforcing regulatory oversight and medicines governance. This work was complemented by regional collaboration with the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States Pharmaceutical Procurement Service to enhance the use of the PAHO Regional Revolving Funds and improve pooled procurement and supply-chain coordination. In addition, an ecosystem assessment for pharmaceutical production was completed, generating information that can be used to inform future investment and policy decisions.
This strengthens the enabling environment for access to essential medicines for all, supports the PAHO Better Care for Non Communicable Diseases initiative and the PAHO Disease Elimination Initiative, and contributes to more resilient supply systems that underpin effective prevention and treatment across priority health conditions in Barbados.
