National plan developed to accelerate the elimination of communicable diseases

Uruguay developed the National Plan for the Elimination of Communicable Diseases 2025–2030, addressing priority conditions including tuberculosis, HIV, syphilis, cervical cancer, Chagas disease, and hepatitis B and C, with a specific focus on the elimination of mother‑to‑child transmission.

Within the framework of the Disease Elimination Initiative, PAHO provided technical cooperation for the design and drafting of the plan. The support included the initial strengthening of the health surveillance system to improve HIV monitoring.

This achievement represents a significant advance in Uruguay’s capacity to address communicable diseases in an integrated, coordinated, and sustained manner, with a focus on conditions that disproportionately affect populations in situations of vulnerability. The existence of a comprehensive national plan aimed at elimination strengthens strategic planning, prioritization of interventions, resource allocation, and accountability across the health system.
