National response to dementias strengthened with a comprehensive approach

With PAHO technical cooperation, Panama completed the development of a national plan for addressing dementias for the period 2025–2030, aligned with national, regional, and global objectives.

Priority areas under the plan include the prevention, early diagnosis, appropriate treatment of the disease, and support for family members and caregivers, with the aim of optimizing the quality of life of people living with dementia. PAHO provided continuous support to the Ministry of Health, the Social Security Fund, and other key stakeholders in the preparation, development, and validation phases of the plan through working sessions and technical meetings focused on a comprehensive approach to dementias. The process achieved a high level of institutional ownership and was fully embraced by the Office of the First Lady of the Republic of Panama, strengthening visibility and intersectoral commitment.

This achievement establishes a national strategic framework to respond to population aging, strengthens the health system’s capacity to address complex chronic conditions, and contributes to more people‑centered care for all across the life course.
