National response to HIV, hepatitis, and sexually transmitted infections strengthened

During the biennium, Peru strengthened its capacity to respond to HIV, viral hepatitis, and sexually transmitted infections through an approach aligned with the PAHO Disease Elimination Initiative.

The provision of technical support enabled the National Institute of Health to obtain accreditation to join the Global HIV Drug Resistance Network  (HIVResNet), representing a significant milestone. Furthermore, PAHO technical cooperation facilitated the alignment of the national plan for the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B, and human T-lymphotropic virus types 1 and 2 (HTLV-1/2) with the Disease Elimination Initiative.

These actions strengthened the country’s diagnostic and surveillance capacities, improved the quality of information for decision-making, and contributed to a more effective response, with expected impacts on reducing new infections, protecting maternal and child health, and advancing toward the elimination of these diseases as public health problems.
