National response to noncommunicable diseases and mental health expanded

Peru strengthened the surveillance, prevention, and control of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and mental health conditions, contributing to a more integrated and sustainable health system response.

Technical cooperation included strengthening information systems by incorporating NCD indicators into national surveys, working in coordination with the National Center for Epidemiology, Disease Control and Prevention, and supporting the country’s participation in Global School-based Student Health Survey on risk factors. In addition, the implementation of the HEARTS initiative was expanded to six regions and Lima, strengthening primary health care capacity for the detection and management of hypertension and other NCDs within the framework of the Better Care for NCDs initiative. Furthermore, PAHO supported the development of a national multisectoral plan for the fight against cancer for the period 2025–2030 and strengthened early detection of childhood cancer, including subregional cooperation within the framework of cooperation among countries for health development.

These advances contribute to improving the quality and continuity of care, reducing the burden of NCDs, and strengthening a primary-care approach focused on health outcomes across the life course.
