National suicide surveillance system established

PAHO supported a major advancement in Guyana’s mental health information system through the launch of the National Suicide and Attempted Suicide Surveillance System in 2025.

This system was established following extensive capacity-building, with over 100 health officials trained in standardized data collection and analysis. By strengthening national surveillance, PAHO helped address a critical evidence gap in a country where suicide represents a significant public health challenge. The availability of timely, reliable data enables health authorities to better understand patterns, risk factors, and geographic distribution of suicidal behavior, informing targeted prevention and response strategies. As part of the Live Life interventions, PAHO also supported school peer education and online trainings for helpline supporters.

This achievement lays the foundation for more effective policy development, resource allocation, and intersectoral action on mental health and suicide prevention. Over time, improved surveillance is expected to enhance early identification of trends, support evaluation of interventions, and contribute to reduced suicide mortality through more informed and responsive public health action.
