Obesity prevention advanced through expanded baby friendly hospital coverage

The largest tertiary facility in Trinidad and Tobago achieved accreditation under the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative in November 2025, the fifth of the country’s six public maternity hospitals to do so. The initiative strengthens national breastfeeding support systems and advances national efforts in the areas of obesity prevention and maternal and child health.

PAHO’s technical assistance included targeted capacity-building, supporting specialized training for 25 multidisciplinary trainers to promote breastfeeding among small, sick, and preterm newborns and providing training materials and equipment to regional health authorities. Additional support included the provision of essential supplies including kangaroo wraps, breast milk storage bags, and insulated carrier bags, thereby strengthening continuity of care for vulnerable populations.

By embedding international standards into routine maternity and neonatal services, PAHO’s contribution reinforces early life nutrition, supports healthy growth and development, and addresses a key risk factor for noncommunicable diseases. These system level improvements contribute to sustained breastfeeding practices, reduce childhood obesity risk, and improved long term health outcomes.
