In the area of health emergencies, Costa Rica systematically strengthened its preparedness and response capacities for respiratory viruses with technical support from PAHO, within the framework of the global Pandemic Influenza Preparedness framework.
Areas of cooperation included the design and implementation of technical instruments for a coordinated response, strengthened interinstitutional coordination, and support for the procurement of critical reagents and supplies for the national reference laboratory, ensuring the continuity and quality of diagnostics. In addition, with support from PAHO, the country formally adopted a national risk communication strategy, improving public trust and the uptake of preventive measures through clear and culturally appropriate messaging.
Together, these actions enhance early detection, monitoring, and timely response to respiratory threats, contributing to the resilience of the health system and the protection of the population against epidemics and pandemics.
