In the 2024–2025 biennium, PAHO supported the Turks and Caicos Islands in strengthening health services capacity by integrating the Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP) and HEARTS in the Americas initiatives into primary health care (PHC).
Through targeted technical cooperation, PAHO trained health workers and supported the country in the implementation of both initiatives, resulting in improved capacity of PHC providers to detect and manage common mental disorders and the institutionalization of HEARTS methodologies within PHC facilities. Efforts also contributed to the establishment of systematic reporting of cardiovascular and data on noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) through the HEARTS platform, and increased awareness among national stakeholders and frontline providers.
By equipping frontline providers with standardized, evidence-based tools and competencies, PAHO helped to expand access to services closer to communities and reduce reliance on specialist care, aligning with national priorities to address the growing burden of NCDs and mental health conditions.
