In the 2024–2025 biennium, PAHO made a substantial contribution to strengthening Guyana’s maternal health outcomes, supporting the country’s progress toward achieving the global target for maternal mortality reduction (fewer than 70 maternal deaths per 100 000 live births by 2030).
Through targeted technical cooperation, PAHO supported capacity-building in emergency obstetric care and postpartum hemorrhage management for 33 health professionals across all 10 regions of the country, strengthening frontline clinical response to the leading causes of maternal death. In parallel, PAHO coordinated training for 52 health workers to expand the Perinatal Information System Plus (SIP+) in hinterland regions and private hospitals, improving the availability, quality, and use of maternal and neonatal data for decision-making. This was complemented by technical support to revise the Community Maternal Health Manual, enhancing guidance for community health volunteers and traditional birth attendants on the early detection of warning signs and the importance of timely referral, particularly in remote and underserved areas.
Together, these interventions strengthened both the clinical and community dimensions of maternal care, reinforcing referral pathways, and data-driven management. By improving skills, information systems, and community engagement simultaneously, PAHO helped to create an enabling environment for sustained reductions in maternal mortality. This achievement contributes not only to improved survival and health outcomes for women and newborns, but also to reducing gaps among populations facing the greatest barriers to access.
