PAHO contributed to the significant strengthening of health workforce competencies in critical areas of maternal and neonatal care through standardized training with national reach, including obstetric emergencies (300 participants), severe maternal morbidity (500), risk‑based antenatal care (600), and neonatal resuscitation (240).
This effort was complemented by the nationwide implementation of the Perinatal Information System Plus (SIP+), which included training for 500 participants and standardized clinical records, improving the quality, continuity, and traceability of care. PAHO technical cooperation was instrumental in the methodological design of the training activities, the harmonization of contents, and support during the implementation of the health information system.
Strengthening human resources and clinical information systems increases the system’s capacity to prevent complications, respond in a timely manner to obstetric emergencies, and reduce maternal and neonatal risks, contributing directly to the reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality and to improved health outcomes across the life course. This achievement enhances the technical capacity of health personnel, contributes to risk reduction for mothers and newborns, and improves the quality of care. The model is scalable to other priority clinical areas through continuous teletraining.
