During the biennium, PAHO supported Nicaragua in strengthening maternal and neonatal health services through the introduction and adoption of key technological innovations. This included the incorporation, training, and updating of national regulations on the use of Ellavi uterine balloons for the management of postpartum hemorrhage – one of the leading causes of maternal mortality worldwide. Complementarily, technical cooperation supported the formulation of new modules of the Perinatal Information System Plus (SIP+), strengthening the recording, analysis, and use of perinatal data for clinical and managerial decision‑making.
These actions, aligned with the regional Zero Maternal Deaths initiative, combined technological innovation, regulatory frameworks, training, and health information systems. PAHO’s contribution helped to reduce preventable risks and improve responses to obstetric emergencies.
