During the 2024–2025 biennium, PAHO played a central role in strengthening health sector governance in Belize by supporting the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MoHW) to develop and operationalize the Health Sector Strategic Plan 2025–2034 and its first results‑based operational plan.
PAHO supported Belize in addressing vaccine hesitancy by empowering Community Health Workers (CHWs) to build trust in immunization services. Through targeted technical cooperation, PAHO assisted the MoHW in designing and implementing training that enhanced CHWs’ technical knowledge on immunization and their communication skills to engage families using culturally appropriate, dialogue‑based approaches.
PAHO supported Belize in tobacco control in line with the internationally accepted strategies through the finalization and tabling of comprehensive tobacco control legislation and the expansion of cessation services.
PAHO supported Belize in advancing mental health reform by strengthening legislation, surveillance, crisis response, and responsible media reporting on suicide and self‑harm. Technical cooperation included developing recommendations to guide updates to mental health legislation in line with international human rights standards, supporting capacity building for police officers and frontline responders for community crisis response, and strengthening implementation of the Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP).
During the 2024–2025 biennium, PAHO strengthened Belize’s preparedness for pandemic influenza and other high‑impact health emergencies by enhancing climate‑resilient health infrastructure and laboratory capacity. In collaboration with the European Union, PAHO supported the SMART retrofitting and greening of five health facilities and the Central Medical Laboratory (CML), including the installation of solar photovoltaics systems, to improve disaster readiness and ensure continuity of essential services during emergencies.
