During the 2024–2025 biennium, PAHO supported Barbados in strengthening health system performance by advancing service delivery optimization and evidence-informed decision-making. Through direct technical cooperation, PAHO facilitated the application of a global tool that enabled the systematic mapping of services across levels of care. This process identified gaps, inefficiencies, and opportunities for better integration within the national health system, providing the Ministry of Health and Wellness with actionable evidence to guide service organization and purchasing decisions.
PAHO played a key role in strengthening Barbados’ regulatory and institutional capacity to improve access to safe, effective, and quality medicines and health technologies.
In the area of noncommunicable diseases and mental health, PAHO supported Barbados in strengthening governance, service capacity, and the integration of mental health into primary health care.
PAHO supported Barbados in making progress under the Disease Elimination Initiative by strengthening capacities for integrated surveillance and validation processes related to the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis. During the biennium, Barbados implemented targeted surveillance actions, adapted elimination tools to the small-island context, and finalized elimination dossiers with PAHO technical support. These outputs reinforced national capacities for monitoring, quality assurance, and evidence generation, positioning the country to sustain gains in maternal and child health.
PAHO contributed to strengthening Barbados’ preparedness and response capacities for health emergencies by providing targeted technical assistance in surveillance, laboratory readiness, and coordination mechanisms. Support included the digitalization of syndromic and event-based surveillance and the strengthening of laboratory capacities, enhancing early-warning and rapid-response functions. These efforts were complemented by regional investments in training and coordination under multicountry initiatives, reinforcing Barbados’ ability to respond to all-hazards emergencies within a subregional framework.
